Familiar elements of pop, latino, Arabic music and jazz styles are present, but refreshed and re-invented within this vitalized new context. Unexpected harmonies, Arabic vocal mellismas and lyrics of depth exploring sentiments, telling tales evoking the desert and exotic locales framed in lush voicing and chord progression, will captivate the listeners. The compelling and accomplished voice of Christine Atallah crowns the songs with a dark, sometimes sultry, sometimes vulnerable ethereal moods of poignant beauty. At moments she is soft and playful, tender and sweet and at others strong, affirmative and soaring of voice.

♼ Review by O'S Place Jazz Magazine :
"We welcome the festive Latin ballads of The Bassalindos. Atallah's voice is pleasant and inviting. The music is upbeat and supports the mood. The addition of brass accents on "Alrededor" makes it pop. It bounces along from song to song, mostly Spanish lyrics that are translated in the liner notes. We liked "Desert Caravan", the gentle rhythm of "Susurro" and the salsa beat of "Taa, Ya Habibee" with dazzling work on violin from Rabih Yazbek. Well done."

about

Review ☆☆☆☆
Jonathan Widran/ AllMusic.com ~ The source of information for music.

"Even if you don't speak any of the five languages that the sensuous-voiced Christine Atallah sings on this magical, multi-ethnic kaleidoscope of a collection, you'll find yourself seduced as Atallah and her band sizzle, groove, and sway with a mix of unique Arabic, Latin, and jazz flavors. The classically trained Quebec-based singer has an incredible pedigree, which includes singing in the Academy Award-nominated film Jesus de Montreal, being discovered during a tour of Verdi's Aida, and touring the world as a featured soloist. Those world travels inform the exciting jazz scales, pop sensibilities, and global grooves on this multifaceted collection, which begins with the swaying flamenco/Arabic fusion on "Taa, Ya Habibee" (the title has something to do with harem nights, but who really knows?) and continues with the loping Egyptian charms of "Idman" and the dreamy violin and conga-spiced Latin gem "Me Voy." Beyond Atallah's always appealing lead vocals, there's a general emphasis on polyrhythmic textures provided by Arabic percussion and instruments like the oud. One of the more dramatic and hypnotic tracks is "Salam," which mixes snappy acoustic guitar lines, an inspirational English lead vocal, and the explosive chantings of the Montreal Mass Gospel Choir. In the midst of the very danceable party, she provides a happily dreamy oasis in the tender sunswept "M'Envoler." These only scratch the surface of the numerous exotic treasures on this exciting new CD."

Track Name: Ta Yaa Habibee
Lyrics :

Taa, ya habibee
La nuit a ses voiles
Je me sens rêveuse
Tout me fait penser à toi

Sheeftack bi helmai
Au fond du sérail
Sens mensonge anaibhaibback
Tant que la nuit a des ombres

Taa, ya habibee
Sans toi mon bonheur n’est assouvi
Je te veux tout près de moi
Taa, ya habibee
Ensorcelle moi par ton désir

Inta Hayati
je ne m’enfuirai pas
Quand tu es près de moi
L’amour sera la loi

Chaleek Haddai

Track Name: M'envoler
M’Envoler ©2006 C.Atallah & D. McLaughlin

Je m’envole de tes mains
peut être pour jamais

Je ne pense pas comme toi
Tu me trouves fière
C’est naturel, je ne veux
regarder en arrière
Tu n’as pas compris
Qui est-ce- que’ j’ suis, alors…

Chorus :
Laisse moi voler
Laisse moi rêver
Laisse moi faire
Laisse moi vivre

Faire ma volonté
Va tout m’apporter
Je ne vais pas me taire
Je peux tout faire
J’ai plein de courage,
Je n’ai pas peur de ta rage

Bridge :
On a avancé vers l’égalité
Mais nous avons encore loin à aller
Le destin doit se concrétiser

Je ne vais pas me cacher
Les loups peuvent s’essayer
Les femmes sont habituées
De beaucoup endurer
Je n’ai pas besoin de secours
J’ai mille et un recours
